Trustees of nine BEd colleges affiliated with the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) recently had a meeting with the Gujarat University vice-chancellor, urging him to expedite the process of reaffiliation. According to sources, the vice-chancellor informed them that they are still awaiting government permission for the reaffiliation. However, the university will grant them provisional affiliation so that they can participate in the admission process.
Sources also revealed that the state government has not yet approved their return to their original universities. Prior to being merged with IITE three years ago, these nine BEd colleges were affiliated with Gujarat University. Controversies surrounding mismanagement at IITE prompted the decision to return these colleges back to their respective original universities.
Officials from IITE, also known as the Teachers’ University, stated that this decision aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP), which will go into effect in the academic year 2023-24.
Currently, Gujarat University has 42 private BEd colleges. With the addition of these nine colleges, the total number of available BEd seats at GU will reach 4,500. Administrators of these colleges have also met with education department officials, urging them to swiftly grant approval for their affiliation.
